HIGH ROAD
SERVICES SOCIETY
ABOUT

OUR HISTORY:
HIGH ROAD Services Society has its roots in a small group of determined parents who came together in May 2005. Their goal was simple but ambitious: to create better opportunities for their loved ones with developmental disabilities in the Smithers area. They wanted services that not only met basic needs but also gave people the chance to live full, meaningful, and independent lives.
The persistence of the group quickly gained attention. Their voices reached both local and provincial leaders, demonstrating the power of family and self-advocate partnerships. By February 28, 2006, their vision took shape in the form of the Smithers Parent/Self Advocate Coalition Society - a grassroots movement that placed lived experience at the center of decision-making.
In the early part of 2007, the members decided to do more than advocate: they would become service providers themselves. Their bold decision led to the awarding of six contracts for support service programs in the spring of that year. On June 1, 2007, the Society officially opened its doors under a new name: HIGH ROAD Services Society.
What began as a parent-driven initiative quickly grew into a respected community agency. Building on those early programs, High Road Services Society has grown to offer a broad range of support services, including Self-Help groups, Residential programs, Home Sharing, Community Inclusion, Supported Employment, as well as our social enterprise, iKitchen.
GROWING TOGETHER:
Today, HIGH ROAD Services Society employs more than 70 dedicated staff who provide services in Smithers, Houston, and Burns Lake. We remain true to our roots: building community, supporting independence, and fostering inclusion. Over the years, the organization has not only delivered programs, but also fostered strong partnerships with local businesses, schools, and community groups – with the overarching goal of ensuring that adults with developmental disabilities are supported, respected, and included in their communities.
OUR LEGACY:
HIGH ROAD Service Society’s history is more than just dates and programs - it’s a story of families, advocates, staff, and community members working side by side. It is a story of
determination, growth, and compassion. And it is a story that continues to be written, as we look toward new opportunities to expand services, strengthen advocacy, and build a community where everyone belongs.

CARF ACCREDITATION:
What is CARF Accreditation?
The Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) is an independent
accreditor of health and human services that accredits care agencies internationally. During the accreditation process, CARF supports service providers in enhancing service quality, demonstrating value, and meeting internationally recognized standards of excellence.
The CARF Accreditation process includes an on-site survey, during which a team evaluates
services and business practices against internationally recognized standards. Achieving
accreditation demonstrates a service provider’s sustained commitment to continuous
improvement, effective risk management, and excellence in service delivery.
Our CARF Accreditation
Accredited by CARF since 2014, we were awarded another three-year term in May 2023 for
meeting the highest standards of quality and care, determined through a rigorous review
process. This longstanding achievement highlights our team’s dedication and commitment to
quality support services.
